Lee was born on January 11, 1954 in Ames the son of Keith and Helen Hixson. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1972 and from Iowa State University in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in business. Lee married Janet Hays on September 24, 1977 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Lee and Janet traveled alongside one another throughout their married life. Trips that often included destinations to be with other members of family.
Lee started working at United Fire & Casualty Group in 1977. He attained his Charted Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation on October 16, 1989. After retiring from his position in 2014 as an underwriter at United Fire & Casualty, Lee filled his days with the second love of his life, the pursuit of his golf game…among other things. He was once quoted that “he would play every day if he could.” On one round at Twin Pines he recorded a hole-in-one, and at one point he had honed his skills to competition level and was good enough to take 3rd place at the City Am golf tournament. Trips were taken to play golf courses around the country and one of the highlights was a trip with friends to Augusta, Georgia to see the Masters.
Lee was also an avid sports fan and in younger years competed in league volleyball, basketball and softball. He had a wide circle of friends including golfing buddies, neighbors and co-workers that were an extension of family.
Holidays at Lee and Janet’s house often included lengthy discussions about any number of sports related topics. ISU Cyclones, Cardinals, Vikings, Chiefs, and Cubs or sometimes just events of current days with his brother-in-law, nieces and nephews and more in the man cave of their home in S.E. Cedar Rapids, usually while watching a game together and sipping on a cold brew.
Lee was a remarkable man and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Lee’s family would like to thank the staff at Hallmar Village and Summit Pointe for their care and kindness to Lee.
