"The foundational call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels. During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462)" (USCCB).
Throughout Lent, our parish will take up a second collection at all weekend Masses. The monies collected will benefit the following organizations:
Catholic Charities | Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Dubuque reduces poverty, strengthens families and empowers communities in the 30 most northeast counties of Iowa.
Catherine McAuley Center | Catherine McAuley Center welcomes refugees and immigrants, adult learners, and women to participate in educational and supportive services.
Birthright of Cedar Rapids | Birthright offers love, friendship, and support to women who are pregnant or think they may be pregnant.
Metro Catholic Outreach | Metro Catholic Outreach delivers consistent and efficient Social Justice and Outreach services to people in need within the Cedar Rapids metro area.
Catholic Relief Services | Catholic Relief Services helps the poor and vulnerable around the world guided by the teachings of the Gospel.
St. John of the Cross Catholic Worker House | St. John of the Cross Catholic Worker House assists people in need of food, shelter, and help for a better tomorrow.
In addition, Metro Catholic Outreach is in need of specific items for those who experience homelessness in our community. HOW CAN YOU HELP? This Lent, help us stock their pantry with these much needed items:
Tear-open bags of tuna
Cans of Libby’s Vienna sausages
Hormel "Compleats" single serving meals
Applesauce cups or packets
Individually packaged peanut butter crackers
Fruit cups
Granola bars
Pudding cups
Individually packaged goldfish crackers
Individually packaged chips, cookies, and assorted crackers
We will have two donation drop off locations on our campus. One near the sign-in kiosk outside the Divine Mercy Chapel and the other in the Rectory hallway near the Divine Mercy Gifts entrance. We will collect donations throughout Lent.
